As we celebrate President Jimmy Carter’s 100th birthday, we honor a man whose impact on Colorado has been both profound and enduring. While his contributions to renewable energy have long shaped our state, it was his hands-on work in Denver’s Globeville neighborhood that truly left an indelible mark.
In 2013, President Carter and Mrs. Rosalynn Carter worked alongside families in the Globeville neighborhood for the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project. Over the course of one incredible week, 11 new homes were built, and 15 existing homes were repaired, transforming the lives of families who partnered with Habitat for Humanity. These families were not just recipients of charity; they contributed “sweat equity,” working hand-in-hand with President Carter to build the very homes where they would create lifelong memories, celebrate birthdays, and raise their children.
President Carter understood that a home is more than four walls and a roof—it’s a place where families find safety, dignity, and the foundation to build a better future. Habitat for Humanity’s mission aligns perfectly with this vision, offering qualified low-income families a path to affordable home-ownership through zero-interest mortgages and their own hard work.
I am not aware of any known public plaque or statue commemorating President Carter's work in Globeville, but his legacy is etched in the walls of every home he helped build and in the hearts of the families he touched. His humility in service reminds us that true greatness isn't about seeking recognition but about making a lasting impact on others.
Happy 100th Birthday, President Carter. Thank you for teaching us that the most meaningful legacy is the one written in the lives of those we serve. May we all strive to follow your incredible example of humility, compassion, and dedication.
